Maine Road and Moss Side 2003 – 2004

After 80 years, Manchester City FC left Maine Road in July 2003 for the City of Manchester Stadium in East Manchester. The stadium has now been demolished and approximately 400 new homes will be built on the 15 acre site. Len Grant was commissioned by Manchester City Council to document the transition of Moss Side's most famous landmark site.

As well as documenting the demolition he photographed and interviewed local residents and businesses. Were they be sad to see the stadium go? Or glad to see the back of it? With artist Margaret Jackson he also undertook an arts project with pupils at St Edward's Primary School which overlooks the stadium. Their work was shown at CUBE during April and May 2004.

A 128-page book was published in November 2004 charting the demolition and the reaction to it.
